How To Stop Noise Getting Past Doors

Door Seals of Australia have a range of automatic door bottom seals created to block what is often the largest gap around a door – the gap between the door and the floor. Filling the gap when the door is closed, automatic seals keep out dust and insects and protect from air, water, smoke, wind, light and noise to guarantee comfort and safety in living spaces.

The seal operates by a plunger compressing against the door frame when the door is fully closed, which activates an internal seal profile to project downwards by up to 14mm. The plunger releases upon the door opening to retract the seal completely, hidden from view.

These DSA seals have been designed to be the most compact available and do not require the fitting of endplates when fully recessed in the door bottom. Installation can be either surface mounted, semi-recessed of fully recessed. DSA have a range of accessories to make the door bottom seal fully airtight with an acoustic rating up to 51dB for the seal. Lengths are available up to 1800mm – which is ideal for wider doors being more commonly specified.

If you specify the inclusion of DSA perimeter and automatic door bottom seals for your next project, this system can make doors fully airtight to resist noise whether they be single and double door situations.

When designing a recording studio, a door opening presents a real acoustic challenge as the door must provide a barrier between the inside of the studio room and the unwanted noise outside. To do this on a temporary basis and allow easy access in and out of the studio, they need to have the gap around the door totally sealed air tight every time it is closed. Even a 1% gap can reduce the acoustic effectiveness of a door by up to 50%.

There are four critical areas to focus on:

1. Ensure your door and frame are constructed of the correct materials and the door sits square in the frame

2. Fit suitable perimeter seals to the frame on both vertical jambs and across the head horizontally at the top

3. Have a suitable automatic door bottom seal fitted to the bottom of the door. Definitely include anti-flanking seal attenuation frame plates, to prevent noise and air bypassing the seal

4. If required fit a suitable threshold plate on the floor surface across the door opening width. To create a bulkhead seal system you can consider fitting the perimeter seal also to the threshold

Door Seals of Australia can supply all these products and can advise the most appropriate acoustic seal solutions to suit any door types being considering for recording studio projects.

Many building projects use folding or sliding doors to provide wonderful wide openings but when the doors are closed shut, how do you make the doors airtight to stop the passage of wind, rain, vermin, heat, cold, airborne dust and other unwanted elements?

Building airtightness can be always improved using seals manufactured by Door Seals of Australia and for these types of doors, a range of different seal options can be used to seal the many air leakage points around the doors.

This popular combination of door seals is often specified for multiple sliding door sets and has been tested to achieve a 33Rw rating using 40mm thick timber doors. Other door seal combinations have also been used successfully in high wind areas having been NATA tested for water penetration resistance pressure up to 2000Pa

DSA Seals Are Cradle to Cradle Certified

Door and window gasket seals provided by Door Seals of Australia have acquired a Cradle to Cradle product certificate. With this certificate, the producer of seals for window and doors shows that its products fit in with the circular economy philosophy which results in a better impact on the environment.

The Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard helps to make product design more intelligent, with the goal of improving product quality, reducing environmental and safety costs in the product chain and ensuring that the products fit within the circular economy.

The Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard guides door and window seal manufacturing through a continual improvement process that looks at a product through five quality categories:

Material health

Material reutilization

Renewable energy and carbon management

Water stewardship

Social fairness

So, in addition to the fact that Door Seals of Australia’s seals and gaskets are made from materials that are 100% recyclable, we are continually improving what products are made of and how they are made, to be a positive force for society and the environment.

For further information, Door Seals of Australia provides a door and window sealing advisory service with a wide range of seal solutions to suit hinged, pivoting, sliding, bi-parting and folding doors and windows.
For certain projects, sealing the gaps around doors and windows can prove quite challenging and this need has led to Door Seals of Australia providing an S6701 gasket seal with five fins, which has a very high effectiveness capability compared to a traditional single fin gasket.

The TPE-V gasket seal features high elasticity, excellent resistance to abrasion and seals against noise, weather, wind, fire, smoke and vermin.

It can be insert into slotted timber or aluminium profiles, plus is also available for use within a straight carrier (DS20-16) or 90deg angled carrier (DS49-16).

This gasket seal has been used successfully on doors which are hinged, pivoting, sliding, folding and tilting. The angled cut means the gasket seal interfaces gradually with the closing surface to form an airtight seal, unlike any other gasket seal available.

Besides being used as a perimeter seal, it be fitted to the door bottom and here are a couple of pictured examples of installations using single or double seals engaging with a DSA DST38 floor mounted threshold.

For further information, Door Seals of Australia provides a door and window sealing advisory service with a wide range of seal solutions to suit hinged, pivoting, sliding, bi-parting and folding doors and windows.

This is a self-adhesive, soft transparent thermoplastic seal, easily applied to leading vertical edge of glass doors and walls. It can be applied with the GLASS BUMPER TOOL which allows a perfect positioning always in the centre of the glass edge.

It is a very popular seal for automatic bi-parting sliding doors, frameless folding doors and shower doors. To seal against weather and sound penetration, it can be combined with other glass door seals including GLASS LIP SLIDE and GLASS LIP.

Every door set assembly will have a gap between the door and the frame, so it can operate. However, this gap can allow unwanted noise to pass through from one side to the other when the door is closed. The easiest way to block any noise is to always introduce physical barriers. For door set assemblies, that means installing door seals completely around the four sides of the door to frame/floor gap, aiming to create an airtight seal.

Door Seals of Australia have now an expanded range of automatic door bottom seals available to allow installation on timber, fire, aluminium and glass doors to widths up to 1800mm.

Around the vertical and top edges of a door, the gap can be sealed by fitting acoustic door seals on the frame to create an airtight seal when a door is closed. The DSA seals feature a unique wedge profile seal gasket which requires lower energy to close against and provides excellent sound attenuation. The fully aluminium carriers are extremely compact and available in silver, or any Dulux colour to match design needs.
